Chennai: Pachaiyappa’s College NSS students voluntarily involved themselves in implementing many social awareness programmes recently.
Speaking to News Today, Pachaiyappa’s College, assistant professor Dr C Paneer Selvam said, “On June 2018, I was appointed as National Service Scheme (NSS), programme officer. Since then, we have carried out many awareness programmes with the support and co-operation of our staff and students. There were five units in our NSS, each units consist of around 100 volunteers. So around 500 students involved themselves in rendering social work.”
He said, “Programmes like traffic awareness on important signal, planting saplings in our college premises, environmental cleaning, plastic awareness to reduce its usage, Kerala flood relief fund, 100 per cent voting awareness and special medical camp were organised.”
“When Tamilnadu government banned plastic and other items that takes many years to decompose, we organised campaign to educate people. It become popular and many students stopped using it within the college campus,” he added.
He added, “Our recent programme was 100 per cent voting awareness camp which was organised at several places. At Villivakkam bus stand, we were able to reach many commuters and people passing through the main stretch. We adopted a village named Malayambakkam near Poonamallee under a programme ‘Special camp for healthy youth for healthy India’. Every year, we go to the village and stay for seven days to serve the people.”
“For three years, we will be organising awareness on health related issues by organising medical camp, drive against pollution among people in the village for healthy life. After that we would find another remote village and continue our service.”
“In future, we have planned to bring awareness on traffic rules and regulations. Many motorists died because they fail to follow rules. Many don;t wear helmets when they drive. So our attention will be on motorists to educate them,” he mentioned.
