Chennai: The students and teachers of Thiruvancheri Panchayat Union Public School near Tambaram are a happier lot as two new classrooms and a special dining area are under construction.

Speaking to News Today, school headmistress S J Panimayam Fernando said, the facilities are being constructed under the CSR activity of a private company.

“The school has been maintaining a strength of more than 300 students in the past few years. This year alone, 71 students have joined out of which 40 are first standard students,” she said.

She further said this was the first school in Kanchipuram district to implement English medium and at present, out of 300 odd students more than 200 are studying in English medium. “We are preparing our students to speak in English on par with private school children,” she said.

Construction work is going on for the new classrooms at Thiruvancheri Panchayat Union Public School near Tambaram.

Recently, a new block, which is constructed at the premises, was inaugurated by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami.

The school, which has more than 300 students, lacked classrooms and the new block was constructed with the allotment from the Member of Parliament Local Area Development (MPLAD) fund of former MP KN Ramachandran.

The work, which began in November 2015 was expected to be completed within six months, got delayed due to various factors.

“The building houses class 10 students and will also have lab, art room and library,” the headmistress said. The institution was upgraded as a higher secondary school in 2014. However, it lacked basic amenities, including furniture and proper rest room facilities. There were only 12 rooms for 15 classes and they lacked even a proper staff room.

A total of 25 teachers are employed to teach students from classes 6 to 12 with an average of 20 students per class.
