Chennai: Following the shocking incident of a woman attacked with a knife by a spurned man at Chetpet railway station last night, Director General of Police of the Railways (GRP), C Sylendra Babu visited the Chetpet railway station this morning.
The incident brought back memories of the murder of a young woman in 2016 at Nungambakkam railway station that stunned the people of the city.
Today, Sylendra Babu conducted inquiries with his subordinates and inspected the scene of crime.
Though the survivor and accused are out of danger, they are yet to give statements to the police.
Last night, at 8, a man, identified as Surendar from Erode, hacked Thenmozhi (25) at Chetpet railway station.
According to sources, the duo, who know each other, got into an argument over his proposal to marry her. He had used a sickle to inflict injuries on her face, neck and fingers and then used the same weapon to kill himself, the police said.
After injuring himself on his head, the man fell on the railway track, the official said, adding there was no train at the time. Both of them are undergoing treatment at different hospitals.
Thenmozhi was employed in a cooperative society in the city.
They belong to different communities and the man had proposed to her earlier, too. However, her family was against the idea.
“The woman’s family had arranged for her marriage with another man. When Surendar confronted her with the matter, she told him that she was ready to marry the man her parents had chosen. This angered him and he attacked her,” the police said.

| The shocking Chetpet incident is eerily similar to the ‘Swathi murder case’ which took place at Nungambakkam railway station three years ago. The victim, S Swathi (24), was an Infosys employee who was murdered 24 June 2016, while on way to office. Swathi was hacked to death by Ramkumar with several people on the railway platform remaining mute spectators. Ramkumar, who was from Tirunelveli, escaped from the spot only to be arrested later. Three months later, Ramkumar, allegedly committed suicide by electrocuting himself at the Puzhal central prison. The police claimed that the accused died after biting a live electric wire. The incident highlighted the need for CCTV cameras and need for more police personnel at railway stations in the city. |
