Chennai: The customs department officials seized foreign currencies worth Rs 99.5 lakh from a passenger at the Chennai international airport yesterday.
The accused was a Sri Lankan national who had arrived from Colombo. The officials had acted on a tip-off.
During interrogation it was revealed that the passenger after arriving from Colombo was bound for Dubai.
Foreign currencies comprising Euros, Kuwaiti Dinars and UAE Dirhams under various denominations worth Rs 99.50 lakh were inside his baggage.
The currencies were recovered under the provisions of the Customs Act 1962 and the passenger was arrested. He was later let off on bail.
