Chennai: Of the many hangout spots at Porur, the park at AGS Colony is most popular among residents of Mugalivakkam, Chennai.

This place is loved by the locals, especially children. The wide and spacious park has a huge play area for the little ones, walking arena and exercising space for the senior citizens and many more amenities. The park is packed with locals during the evenings.

Speaking to News Today, Thiyagarajan, president of a residential association, said, “People of Mugalivakkam requested the then Mayor of Chennai, Saidai Duraiswamy, to renovate the park, and he spent nearly Rs 25 lakh for it. From then on, the Corporation has been maintaining the park very well.”

The park has a security guard and a cleaner. “Myself and my wife Hamsa together work hard to maintain this place neat and clean. We have been working for the past 3 years here. We witness a number of people of all age groups coming here every day,” said Kanniapan, the guard.
Social activist, A S Kannan from Mugalivakkam, said, “This is one of the biggest parks in our area with a large number of traditional trees. People throng here in huge numbers, especially during the weekends.”

“Every day, I come to the park to practise yoga. People, irrespective of age and gender, do their exercises here. There is also good washroom facilities with water connection. The maintenance is really good,” said a resident.

There is also a yoga floor, where locals can sit and meditate peacefully. The park goers now want a shelter above this floor to shield them from hot weather. A visitor said, “Rs 8 lakh is said to be spent for the park’s maintenance every year. So, the officials can definitely spend the amount for building a shelter here and at the entrance as well.”
