Chennai: The Tamilnadu Engineering Admission (TNEA) 2019 counselling for general category will begin tomorrow. This will be the first time the counselling is being conducted online.

The general counselling, which starts 3 July, will have four rounds till 28 July.

Students should pay the initial payment during the counselling. The payment will be adjusted with the college tuition fee during admission. And 80 per cent of the payment will be refunded to candidates who don’t join the college, according to the TNEA website.

Earlier, counselling for differently-abled candidates was held 25 June in which 101 seats were allotted to aspiring students out of 138 ranks released by the admission committee.

Counselling for wards of ex-servicemen was held 26 June in which 121 students were allotted seats out of 950 ranks. For students under eminent sportsperson category, it was held 27 June in which 330 seats were allotted to meritorious students out of 1,650 released ranks.

Earlier, TNEA committee released the merit list for 1.03 lakh applicants out of 1.33 lakh to engineering seats for the current academic year after certificate verification. The total number of aspirants has come down from nearly 1.6 lakh, compared to last year.

This will be the first time the Department of Technical Education (DoTE) will be conducting TNEA counselling whereas Anna University’s TNEA had been doing the service for the last 22 years.

There will be online mode of counselling instead of students coming to Chennai from remote places. DOTE has arranged TNEA facilitation centres (TFC) across the State to help students with online counselling.

State Higher Education Minister K P Anbalagan, who released the merit list recently, said this year, there will be 479 colleges for counselling as 15 colleges had opted out of the admission process.

Anna University has also reduced as many as 270 seats in its colleges and university departments. Candidates may check their details on the DoTE website.
