Chennai: The city police arrested two women and a man for cheating an army personnel of Rs 55,000 in the name of providing an insurance cover.
According to the police, Saravanakumar, a native of Krishnagiri serves at Rajouri in Jammu and Kashmir. Last December, he received a call offering him an insurance worth Rs 3 lakh. The private company had asked him to pay Rs 35,000 as an advance, Rs 10,000 as document charges and Rs 10,000 for issuing an ATM card.
Saravanakumar handed over a cheque for Rs 35,000 and the rest was deposited to them through net banking. However, when he accessed the ATM card, he realised he had been duped.
When he contacted the insurance office, their phones were switched off. Subsequently, he lodged a police complaint. Using the net banking details, police traced them to Aminjikarai.
Police arrested the staff Karthik, Sandhya Narayanan and Kanimozhi. The owner of the bogus firm Arumugham is still at large. Police are looking for details to see if more people have been cheated by the firm.
