Chennai: To curb speed, traffic violation and crime, police department installed cameras in and around Anna Nagar. Now, motorists plying on important roads through Anna Nagar has to be very careful while reaching traffic signals.
Police have installed 63 number plate recognition cameras at K4 police station signal, Roundtana, Shanthi Colony signal and Thirumangalam signal to monitor speed and violation.
On 24 June, Chennai City Police Commissioner A K Viswanathan, Traffic, Additional Commissioner of Police A Arun, Hyundai, CEO and Managing Director Seon Seob Kim and STA, transport commissioner C Samayamoorthy inaugurated the cameras.
According to sources, “The cost for installation of these cameras is Rs 2.5 crore. These cameras were linked to National Informatics Centre with the help a software. In case of traffic violation caught by the camera automatically generates an e-challan and sent to mobile number and the address of vehicle owner as per record in RTO. The violators have to pay the fine amount as soon as possible to avoid further action.”
Bagyaraj, a motorist said, “Previously, I have seen many motorists violating the traffic rules. But after installation of these cameras, most of them not crossing the stop lines. Recently, a motorist behind me asked to move forward, I strictly said, I won’t cross the stop line. Cameras were watching me and it will sent e-challan to my address. Knowing the truth, the man waited for green signal.”
“MTC bus drivers also co-operating with us and advising others not to jump signals and maintain speed as per the sign boards kept on roadside,” says, an police officer.
“Recently, these cameras caught 90,000 violators and e-challan was send to their address. This is done on trial basis. From Mondays onward, these cameras started to render its service. It’s my request to resident of Anna Nagar to follow the traffic rules and avoid fine,” he added.
