Chennai: The main opposition DMK today brought an attention calling motion in the Assembly asking the State government to pass a resolution against the Centre over the NEET issue.
DMK president M K Stalin said the two resolutions seeking exemption from NEET which were passed unanimously in the Assembly two years ago have been ignored by the Union government.
“To show our dissent, a resolution should be passed against the Centre. The Union government ignoring a resolution passed in the State Assembly is an insult to the House,” he said.Ā In response to this, Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam said it is not possible to pass a resolution condemning the Central government.
“However, a review petition will be filed in the High Court or Supreme Court after legal consultation,” he said.Ā Stalin said if that is not possible, then the State government should at least pass a resolution insisting the Central government to take up the resolutions. Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami said a decision on the issue will be taken after legal consultation.
CM announces 2 new power plants for Chennai
Palaniswami made a few announcements under the Rule 110 which included the development of infrastructure in various colleges at a cost of Rs 54 crore, construction of additional classrooms, libraries, computer labs and toilets at a cost of Rs 163 crore.
He further said shoe and socks will be given to students of government and government aided schools at a cost of Rs 10 crore.
“New equipment at a cost of Rs 3,000 crore will be brought to control the dust emanation from the thermal power plants. Two new power plants will be set up in Chennai at a cost of Rs 5,000 crore,” he said.
All-party meeting
Meanwhile, an all-party meeting is to be held later this evening to thrash out the issue of Tamilnadu implementing the 10 per cent quota for economically-weaker sections from ‘forward communities’.
The meeting, to be held at 5.30 pm, will be chaired by Palaniswami who had promised on the floor of the House that it would be held to decide on the new rule passed by the Centre. Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly M K Stalin had raised the issue during zero hour 25 June and sought the government’s stand on the new 10 per cent quota. He sought to know the government’s stand on the issue which he described as a dangerously poisonous snake.
Responding to Stalin’s question, Palaniswami assured that he would convene an all-party meeting of recognised parties to discuss the issue. He said the government would not give up the 69 per cent quota that it had been implementing all these years.
