We are investing big time in India: Transsion

New Delhi: Revealing its big plans for India, Chinese handset maker Transsion Holding has said it is looking at ramping up its exports from India to markets like Africa and Middle East.

Speaking at the launch of its latest flagship, Tecno Phantom 9, here, Transsion India’s CEO Arijeet Talapatra, said, “We are investing big time in India, with plans to set up an industrial park and do R&D here. We want to make in India and export to Africa, we have started with small numbers but we will expand it.”

According to Transsion India chief operating officer, Marco Ma, the industrial park is more for creating a supply chain ecosystem and not only in the mobile phone, but also other categories.

India importance

Talapatra said, “India is the fastest growing smartphone market globally and a key market for us. We have been here for about three years, but India is already our fourth biggest market; and we are confident that it will move into the top three next year.”

Transsion, which operates three brands – Tecno, Infinix and itel – in India, is also confident of the country becoming one of its top three markets by next year.

The company is looking at 40-50 acres and is talking to different States, where mobile phone accessories will be made. Its yet-to-be-launched consumer durables brand may also be made here.

Transsion already has two manufacturing units in India with an annual capacity of 20 million feature phones and 10 million smartphones.

In all categories

Marco Ma said Tecno will bring in products across price categories, including under-Rs 8,000 and above-Rs 12,000 ranges, and will be sold through online and offline channels.

“In the last six months, the share of online channel has grown from 32 per cent to 41 per cent. While we have a very vast offline network, we will now be present online as well, starting with Phantom 9,” he added.

Of Flipkart & handset

Phantom 9 was launched for Rs 14,999 in India on Wednesday. The device will be available for purchase on Flipkart from 17 July.

On partnering with Flipkart, Marco said, “We are expanding our presence in India and want to reach out to all our consumers across the length and breadth of the country. Our partnership with Flipkart will be instrumental in making Tecno range of smartphones available pan India.”

Phantom 9 features a 6.4-inch FHD+ display with 19:5:9 aspect ratio. It is powered by MediaTek Helio P35 processor and coupled with 6GB RAM.

The phone offers 128GB of internal storage which is further expandable up to 256GB via microSD card slot. It also features an in-display fingerprint sensor, and offers an Artificial Intelligence (AI) face unlock option too.

On the optics front, Phantom 9 houses a triple rear camera that is made up of 16MP primary sensor, 8MP secondary sensor and a 2MP depth sensor. There is also a 32MP selfie camera which comes with AI beauty mode and Wide Selfie mode.

On Wednesday, Manchester City renewed its multi-year partnership with Tecno as its Official Global Tablet and Handset Partner. Senior vice-president of partnerships at City Football Group, Damian Willoughby, said, “Manchester City prides itself on partnering with ambitious, pioneering and creative organisations, so we are thrilled to be announcing the extension and expansion of our highly successful partnership with Tecno.”
