Chennai: Abi Hassan is all set to make his acting debut in Kadram Kondan releasing next week. Produced by Kamal Haasan under his banner Raj Kamal Films International, the action flick is directed by Rajesh M Selva and stars Vikram, Akshara and Abi in lead roles.

Speaking to News Today, Abi speaks with a charming smile and a sense of curiosity (Maybe perhaps its because he is new and has so much to learn in the industry?). As a young man, Abi reveals he always wanted to get into acting. “I studied acting at BOFTA academy in Kodambakkam,’ says Abi. ‘But after completing my course. I didn’t get much opportunity. So I got into film making.”

Abi worked in Mersal as an assistant director which he credits it as a ‘huge experience’. “I learned how it felt to undergo difficulties when you don’t get your days’ worth of betta (salary).” His patience and skills for acting fortunately favoured him when he came across the chance to work in Kadaram Kondan.

How did he get this role? “People assume that as my father (Nasser) and Kamal Haasan sir are friends, I easily got the role,” explains Abi. “But it was the other way. Like many other actors, I too auditioned and in fact, I wasn’t their first choice too.” He adds, “I was later told to meet Kamal sir. He told me that just because I met him didn’t mean I was selected.” Eventually, Abi had to take part in acting workshops before being finalised to rake the role.

Speaking about his performance, Abi says, “I play doctor Vasu. Throughout the film, my character is involved with the role portrayed by Vikram sir.” To prepare for his role, Abi took a fitness regime. “I was actually a bit fat when I was cast,” laughs Abi. “Kamal sir suggested that I reduce my weight.”

Was Abi star stuck when he saw Vikram? “I often told my family that I wanted to be a great actor like Vikram sir. He is very talented and versatile. He does anything to get into the role,” praises Abi. “When I saw him for the first I was very scared. But he was very jolly while working. The entire set will be laughing and have fun.” Abi also offered his praise to the director Rajesh M Selva. ‘He is super professional,” he says. “He organises things very well.”
