Duo in Chennai adopts two animals at Vandalur zoo

Chennai: Kannan Parthasarthy and T Gayathri from St Thomas Mount adopted Lion tailed macaque and Nilgiri langur at Arignar Anna Zoological Park by contributing Rs 2 lakh for the animals’ food and maintenance.

The cheque was handed over to the AAZP director Yogesh Singh, a press release said.Ā Arignar Anna Zoological Park houses more than 2,600 animals and 171 species of wild animals which includes endangered species. The zoo plays a significant role in conservation of endangered species like Lion tailed macaque and Nilgiri langur.

Lion tailed macaque and Nilgiri langur are the most critically endangered species indigenous to the tropical rain forest of the Western Ghats in South West India. This animal was taken care under captive breeding programme. Presently the zoo has 21 Lion tailed macaque and 18 Nilgiri langur.

To create love, affection, compassion and kindness among public towards animals, the animal adoption programme was introduced at Arignar Anna Zoological Park, Vandalur in 2009. Many individuals, celebrities and organisations
have adopted zoo animals.
