Pedestrians face problems at Collector Nagar signal

Chennai: School children and pedestrians were finding it difficult to cross Collector Nagar signal without zebra crossing and less timing.

For the convenience of commuters and pedestrians, a zebra crossing and enough signal timing have to be provided at this junction.

Ganesh, a pedestrian said, “The junction where Bazaar Road is connected to Ambattur Industrial Estate Road is a busy point with plenty of buses and other vehicles passing throughout the day. Moreover, large number of two-wheelers are adding their share to the heavy traffic.”

“To cross the Ambattur Industrial Estate Road from Bazaar Road, it takes several minutes as the pedestrian has to look at all three sides and then start his/her journey towards the other end,” he added.

Joseph a college student who is alighting at the Collector Nagar bus stop junction at the Ambattur Industrial Estate Road said that he has to very carefully see all the sides before crossing, as the vehicles are coming in a good speed.
He also said that the people are crossing from different points as there is no proper zebra crossing available.

More importantly, the senior citizens while crossing have to step up their speed to match the speed of the vehicles.
Palani who is a resident of Bazzar Road said that a zebra crossing will avoid scattered crossing of the road and also will be very safe. It is necessary to repaint the crossing often for the welfare of the road users.

He also mentioned that if the pedestrian crossing is noted by motorists, they will be stopping at the stop line. Otherwise, most of them will rush to reach their destination without bothering the walkers.

“During night, motorists can identify the white paint and give space for the movement of pedestrians,” says, Ragunathan, a senior citizen. “I want to thank the officials for taking road safety measures. We request them to repaint the pedestrian crossing wherever the road is being re-laid,” says, Koteeswaran, a resident of JJ Nagar.

A traffic policeman said, “I have seen some pedestrians finding difficult to cross this signal. Many times, I help senior citizens to cross the road. I have noticed that the timing to cross the stretch is not enough for elderly persons. I have informed my higher officer to increase the timing for pedestrians.”
