Chennai: Saravana Bhavan hotel chain owner P Rajagopal, convicted and sentenced to life in a murder case, passed away in Vijaya Hospital this morning.

According to a plea filed in court by his son P Saravanan to shift him to a private hospital for treatment after he was admitted to Stanley Government Hospital, his 72-year-old father was seriously ill. He said he was immobile and bedridden with due care from two attendants round-the-clock.

Rajagopal, it is said, suffers from chronic diabetes, owing to which he has a kidney malfunction as well. He also has heart problems, difficulty in walking owing to various conditions, acute gastroenteritis, etc., apart from multiple systemic diseases.

With the Madras High Court granting permission 16 July to shift Rajagopal from Stanley to a private hospital, he was moved to Vijaya Hospital in Vadapalani the same night. He passed away this morning.
