Hyderabad: Concerned over rising sexual abuse, a village in Telangana has passed a resolution to banish eve-teasers and those who commit sexual assaults on women and girls. The Kanukunta Gram Panchayat in Sangareddy district adopted the resolution on 16 July, its ‘sarpanch’ (panchayat head) B Neelamma said.

Neelamma said the villagers took the decision to banish those commit atrocities against women and girl children in view of the rising crime against them.

“Nowadays incidents of rapes and other sexual offences are on the rise. We the villagers are committed to protection of girls and women. Whoever from the village who indulges in eve-teasing or any other similar offence against women and girls, there is no place for them in our village,” the resolution read.

“Besides, such people will be handed over to police and we will fight to make sure they get stern punishment,” it added.
State Secretary of Telangana Yuvajana Sangala Samithi, a youth organisation, Uday Kumar said they met elected representatives of the Gram Panchayats in Gummadidala Mandal in Sangareddy district to pass the resolution after they were shaken by the incident ofrape and murder of a nine-month-old baby girl by a man in Warrangal on 19 June.

ā€œWe are trying to involve youth in our efforts to prevent violence against women and girls. As of now the resolution has been passed by Kanukunta village,” he said expressing hope more villages will follow suit. A ward member in the village said officials should also take steps to prevent such acts and punish the guilty.
