Chennai: The DMK has announced a solatium of Rs 1 lakh for the family of Mariammal, who was murdered along with former mayor of Tirunelveli and her husband Tuesday.

Uma Maheswari and her husband Muruga Sankaran were murdered in their house in Rose Nagar on Reddiarpatti Road by a gang in broad daylight. They did not spare the maid, Mariammal either. All three of them were stabbed to death and were found in different parts of the house.

The  jewellery that Uma Maheswari was wearing, 20 sovereigns from the bureau and Rs 50,000 were found stolen.

DMK president M K Stalin was in Tirunelveli yesterday to pay homage to the dead leader and her husband and console their family members.
