Chennai: The overhead live cables pose threat to residents of MGR Nagar while they stand on their terrace at Kodungaiyur in Perambur.
The Tamilnadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) has planned to replace the cables and lay it through underground network. But the work is yet to get underway, the residents claimed.
The situation becomes worse when it rains. The cables fall on water on the terrace and its poses danger to people. “The electricity department has not taken note of it for the last 35 years. The area is prone to power outrages. Despite repeated complaints from the local residents for past 10 years, no action has been taken,” said Sermakani J, a resident.
“Power shutdown always happens here whenever it rains with heavy wind and cables fall on the stagnated water. A few years ago, two girls got electrocuted and five electricity board staff were suspended,” said Balan G, a resident of MGR Nagar.
When contacted, a TANGEDCO official said, “A large scale project to lay underground cables were taken in Perambur and Tambaram under first phase in October 2018. The two places were selected as there are many overhead cables in the narrow congested lanes. The work has started from last month.”
