Chennai: The hustle and bustle of the high voltage campaign for the Vellore Lok Sabha election will come to an end tomorrow.
Intensifying their electioneering, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and DMK president M K Stalin will be speaking at public meetings today.
Palaniswami will seek vote for his party candidate A C Shanmugam in Anaikattu at 4 pm and Vellore at 6 pm today.
Meanwhile, Stalin will canvas for DMK candidate Kathir Anand at Gudiyatham. He will also take part in a public meeting at Vellore Mandi Street tomorrow.
During his campaigns, Palaniswami slammed DMK as a ‘family party’, and sought the people’s support for AIADMK by focusing on his government’s performance. In the AIADMK, Palaniswami said, ordinary workers got the opportunity and they can even become the Chief Minister since there was no dynasty politics.
In his propagation, Stalin said the party will have a better margin in the Vellore Lok Sabha poll than the recently held general election.
The AIADMK has deputed a 209-strong panel to oversee the Vellore parliamentary poll, whereas the DMK has a 71-member committee overseeing the election. Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam along with other Ministers will also carry out electioneering today and tomorrow.
The poll will be held on 5 August and counting of votes will be taken up on 9 August. The Election Commission (EC) had earlier rescinded the polling for the seat 18 April following seizure of large amount of cash. The elections would witness a three-cornered contest, though the fight would be between the AIADMK and the DMK. The third nominee in fray is Deepalakshmi of Naam Tamizhar Katchi of actor-director Seeman.
Police, Case & Court
Meanwhile, after a marriage hall in Ambur, Vellore, was sealed shortly after Stalin chaired an election meeting to seek the support of Muslim community leaders Thursday, sources said a case has been registered against Stalin and the DMK candidate for the constituency, Kathir Anand.
Reports, state that based on a complaint from returning officer Tahsildar R Sujatha, the Ambur police have registered a case against the DMK president and Kathir Anand. Yesterday, a team of officials, led by Assistant Returning Officer and Ambur Tahsildar Sujatha, visited the function hall in Ambur to hold inquiries on whether prior permission was obtained for holding the meet. After inquiry, the authorities sealed the hall for hosting the meet without permission.
This morning, the Madras High Court was moved to get the seal removed from the hall. The court agreed to hear the case this afternoon if it was filed in the form of a petition.
