Chennai: Condemning the National Medical Commission Bill, 2019, students of several medical colleges in Chennai today boycotted classes and clinical posting and have begun an ‘indefinite strike’.
According to sources, 18 medical colleges in Tamilnadu are staging the protest. While the students of Madras Medical College criticised the bill by planting saplings, other students studying at Stanley Medical College, Omandurar Medical College and Kilpauk Medical College boycotted clinical posting and classes.
Speaking about the demands, Nijavarthan, a pre-final-year student at Stanley Medical College, said, “The bill is anti-medical students. The details of undertaking NEXT exam have not been pointed out clearly. According to the bill, even a student who has completed just class 12 will be eligible to undergo a bridge course and be identified as ‘community health worker’ which does not do justice to the MBBS students who clear multiple entrance examinations and be posted as a doctor.”
