Chennai: The Indian Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rain for Tamilnadu and Puducherry for the next three days.
Several parts of the State are already facing flooding owing to heavy rain in the Western Ghats. Yesterday, Avalanche in the Nilgiris received 82 cm of rain. So, the district administration has declared a holiday for schools and colleges. More rain is forecast for Coimbatore and Nilgiris today also.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has said heavy winds, reaching up to 50 kmph, would blow in the Bay of Bengal and so, fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea. Fishermen have not put out to sea for the past five days in Vedaranyam in Nagapattinam district on a warning from the Fisheries Department about rough sea conditions.
The RMC has said the southwest monsoon has intensified owing to the low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal.
Due to heavy rain in the catchment areas, dams in Tirunelveli are filling up fast. In one day yesterday, the water level in Papanasam dam in Tirunelveli went up by 12 ft and Servalar dam by 28 ft.
Heavy winds are battering several areas of Kanyakumari district.
