Chennai: The city police arrested a man who was transporting Burma teak wood illegally at Red Hills last night.

According to the police, based on a tip-off about the transportation of Burma teak woods from Moregram of Assam State, a team intercepted a Maharashtra registration lorry.

The driver of the vehicle was identified to be Annadurai (42) of Dhanuskodi, Pattukottai.

The vehicle was loaded with 25 metric tonnes of Burma teak worth more than Rs 1 crore. Preliminary investigation revealed that Annadurai was asked to take the wood by a smuggler, Balamurugan of Cholavaram. He had planned to ferry the teak in a container to foreign countries and sell them there.
