Chennai: Just 15, S A Samuel Jones, a tennis player from Porur, holds a place among the top three positions in the State level and is called ‘tennis superstar’ by his family members and coach.

In a conversation with News Today, Samuel and his parents share about his achievements and his love for the sport.

“It all started when he was seven. Initially, he was selected for the fitness class in his school and then after some days, he was selected for tennis classes by his coach,” says Jenita, his mother. “We didn’t expect then that Samuel would reach such heights and that too in a short period,” she goes on to add.

HUGE SUPPORT FROM COACH AND SCHOOL
Talking about his performance and growth in the sport, Jenita says, “Samuel’s coach Jora and his school are pillars of support for him. Since he cannot attend his first and last periods due to practice, his teachers take extra care to teach him the missed out portions.”

ACHIEVEMENTS SO FAR
“I have played for State-level competitions in U 12 and U 14 categories. I have also played and won the All India Tennis Association – U 12 title,” lists Samuel.

HIS SPECIAL MANTRA
“Handling pressure is one of the challenging things that any player goes through. My coach has taught me how to stay calm and focused, irrespective of who my opponent is. I also do not try to know my opponent’s range, as it may lead to wrong prediction. Also, hard work and rigorous practice gives me the needed confidence,” says the talented kid when asked whether he follows any tactics while inside the court.

WAY FORWARD
So what are his future plans? “At present, I need to balance both my studies and tournaments well. I hope to play in Wimbledon one day and win grand slam titles.
I am working very hard for it,” he says with confidence.

Samuel can be contacted at 94443 31551.
