Chennai: A day after Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam inspected the flood-hit areas in Nilgiris, Tamilnadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami yesterday chaired a meeting at the Secretariat to review the rain and flood situations in Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts. On 6 and 7 August, these districts received continuous rain, causing landslides and floods.
He said that about 6,910 people have been affected by landslides and floods in Nilgiris, and they are being given shelter in 67 relief camps with officials ensuring that all amenities are provided to them.
295 fully damaged huts would be replaced with new solar-powered greenhouses at a total cost of Rs 30 crore and the house owners would be given Rs 5,000 each. About 1,225 huts were partially damaged, and a compensation of Rs 4,100 would be given to each of the house dwellers, he said.
He also ordered officials to send proposals to the Centre on the funding required for permanent restoration of the damaged infrastructure.
He further stated that the extent of damage to horticultural crops would be surveyed before 16 August and that proposals would be sent to the Government to provide input subsidy to farmers.
153.34 km of damaged roads, 185 small bridges, 115 electricity poles and 3.5-km long power cables and six transformers would be rebuilt and fixed, said the CM.
Palaniswami further said solatium of Rs 10 lakh has already been given to the family members of five persons who were killed in rain-related incidents, and kin of a man in Nilgiris would also be provided the aid. Eleven of the injured people and cattle would also be given relief.
Over 1,500 personnel drawn from the State and National Disaster Response Force, police, army, and departments of Fire and Rescue, Highways, Electricity were deployed for relief work besides requisite equipment to handle the situation.
