Chennai: The country’s 73rd Independence Day was celebrated with a difference at the SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Kattankulathur campus, near Chennai, Thursday, with a mini marathon on the theme of water conservation.
The SRM Run, as it was called, highlighted the vital importance of ‘Saving Water Before It Runs Out’. India’s bronze medalist in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and 1995 Arjuna awardee, V Devarajan was the chief guest. SRMIST Vice Chancellor Sandeep Sancheti joined over 1,400 students and faculty in the 5.3 km Run, a press release said.
The Vice Chancellor and SRMIST Director-Sports Vaithianathan hoisted the national flag near the Tech Park of SRMIST located on the Swami Vivekananda road in the campus.
Speaking on the occasion, Sandeep Sancheti stressed the importance of educating young minds in saving water and other resources for the betterment of the nation. “India is progressing mainly because of the new generation, so it is very important to educate the youth which is the main objective of SRM. The young minds should always create awareness in the society on various issues including water scarcity, pollution, cleanliness and corruption and never compromise on work ethic and efficiency,” he said.
Later, students showed their skills through street play, dance and self defense techniques to empower women.
