Kozhikode: A month after triple talaq bill was passed by the Parliament, the Kerala police arrested a 31-year-old man for allegedly giving instant talaq to his wife.
This is the first case under the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019, in the State after the practice became a criminal offence.
A media report said that the wife of the accused had directly registered a complaint with the Thamarassery Judicial First Class Magistrate Court. She said that the man allegedly pronounced talaq three times in front of her and her parents. She further accused that Ussam has tried to marry another woman and flee to some foreign country. Following this, a warrant was issued and the accused E K Ussam was arrested in Mukkom and produced before the court.
Ussam has been charged under section 3 (pronouncement of talaq by words, either spoken or written or in electronic form or in any other manner whatsoever void and illegal) and section 4 (punishment with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three years and shall also be liable to fine).
Meanwhile, the family of the accused said there was an agreement between the husband and the wife to enter into a mutual divorce and denied all the allegations.
