Chennai:Ā “Deoband was a revivalist movement organised by the orthodox Muslim Ulema with the twin objectives of propagating the pure teachings of the Quran,” defendedĀ Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind’s StateĀ President Mansoor KashifiĀ yesterday seeking deletion of some controversial paragraphs regarding this in class 10 textbooks.

The movement was to encourage the spirit of Jihad against the foreign and un-Islamic elements, he further added.

The Tamilnadu unit that comprises prominent Islamic scholars said theĀ contents of a 10th standard social science textbook said the 19th century Deoband movement had an objective to encourage spirit of Jihad. The unit has written toĀ the State Council of Education Research and Training seeking deletion of the controversial paragraphs.

According to the outfit, Deoband was a revivalist movement organised by pious Muslim Ulama with twin objectives of propagating the pure teachings of the Quran as well as encouraging to oppose the British Rule.

Following this a media report said that the TNSCERT would carry out the necessary deletions in the next online edition of the textbook. Action would be taken against the those involved in writing the lines.

KashifiĀ said that similar instances had happened earlier. HeĀ said he was unsure how the aeducational institutions were getting such big words when many checks have been done before publishing a text book.
