Chennai: After a string of suicides were reported from a private university, Kattankulathur on the outskirts of the city, CBCID Superintendent of police, Mallika and her team visited the 250-acre campus today to begin an inquiry into the case.

Recently, a series of student suicides, shockingly in the same manner, were reported on the campus. This prompted parents to lodge a police complaint, following which, Director-General of Police J K Tripathy ordered that the cases be transferred to CBCID. The cases were earlier handled by Maraimalai Nagar police.

It may be noted that the first case was reported 26 May. The victim Anupriya (23), a biomedical engineering student allegedly jumped from the 10th floor of her college hostel. However, in her suicide note, she had mentioned that she was frustrated that her parents restricted her.

The following day, another first-year student, Aneesh Chowdary (19) of Jharkhand who was staying in the college hostel also allegedly jumped off the fifth floor of his hostel building.

Later, 15 July, S Raghavan, a final year IT student allegedly jumped from the second floor. Subsequently, a press statement from the universityĀ expressed anguish over the incidents. It said that support and guidance are being offered by the college to students who are in need of counselling.
