Two men arrested in Vedaranyam communal clash

Nagapattinam: The Tamilnadu police have today arrested the two men identified as the key accused involved in the vandalism of Dr B R Ambedkar’s statue in Vedaranyam following a communal clash.

This led to a violent clash between members of two communities. Even as normalcy returned to the town, the police today arrested the two key accused Pandiarajan (33) and Lenin (25) hailing from Vedaranyam and Kadinelvayal, respectively.

Police had yesterday detained 58 people belonging to both communities in connection with the clash, and 28 people were booked under various sections of IPC.

More than 750 police personnel have been deployed in the town to prevent any untoward incidents.

An accident on Sunday involving an SUV where a Dalit youth was injured is reportedly said to have triggered the violence.

The opposition parties in the State, including the DMK and the Left, slammed the desecration of the Ambedkar statue and they demanded action against the culprits.
