Chennai: Urinary incontinence is an underdiagnosed and underreported problem that increases with age and affects 50-84 per cent of the elderly population, said a communique from Apollo Hospitals.
In a bid to raise awareness on urinary incontinence and female bladder dysfunction, Apollo Hospitals, Chennai organised an international conference FEBICON that saw the participation of urologists, gynecologist and urogynecologists and other experts from several countries.
Urinary incontinence affects millions of women in India, affecting their daily quality of life. Modern medicine has brought hope for those struggling with an irregular urge or release of urine. The conference, organised by the hospital’s consultant obstetrician, urogynecologist and robotic surgeon, Dr Meera Ragavan, discussed the new treatment options available to treat urinary incontinence, added the press release.
Meera Ragavan said, “Urogynaecology is an evolving hybrid sub-speciality that deals with sensitive, embarrassing and chronic quality of life issues. Hence, we organise such Continuing Medical Education (CME) programmes creating a platform for public awareness and among healthcare professional and allied healthcare providers to ensure a multi-faceted approach in managing such issues. Lifestyle modifications, physiotherapy, medical and surgical interventions are the solutions offered to the patients suffering from urinary incontinence.”
