Chennai: The Greater Chennai police have laid out detailed security arrangements for Vinayaka Chathurthi, with over 2,000 personnel being deployed across the city.
According to sources, one policeman will be posted at each Vinayaka Chathurthi pandal in most areas. Officials have also laid down stringent rules to be followed for the festival on 2 September and after that.
A police source said, “There will be 2,000 personnel from the police and home guard to be deployed across the city mainly to ensure that law and order is maintained and there is no disturbance for public peace. The challenge is to make sure groups do not clash with each other during celebrations.”
The city police will be working with the other departments such as Electricity Board, Fire and Rescue Services and Chennai Corporation. Those setting up pandals must get No Objection Certificates (NOC) from various departments.
The police will be on rounds to make sure the day goes smoothly. “At this time we will check the identity cards of the organisers and the NOC documents,” the source said.
This year, permission has been given to immerse 2,600 vinayaka idols, while the number stood at 2,700 last year.
Police have also chalked out sensitive areas in the city and will be deploying additional policemen here. “There are rules to be followed. This year we will register cases against those who use loud speakers,” sources said.
“The height of the idol must not exceed more than what is sanctioned. Electricity must be sourced legally. Digital banners are not allowed at the pandal. Also, flags, flexes, posters or banners of political parties are not to be displayed.”
“Inflammable objects are also not to be kept which could be dangerous to the public. We will not allow construction of thatched huts,” sources said. This year, as many as 5,000 policemen will be deployed when the devotees immerse the idols. The city police are planning on identifying immersion points for the festival.
“Last year the entire beach was open for people to immerse the idols. But we think designated spots must be identified
for better safety of visitors.” The Tamilnadu Pollution Control Board has issued guidelines for immersion of idols in waterbodies.
People should immerse the idols only in designated places, notified by the district administration and police. Usually
it is Marina Beach, Pattinampakkam and Srinivasapuram. This time, a police officer in the rank of Inspector has
been appointed to guide outfits and individuals to get all clearance from respective departments to avoid confusion.
