Chennai: With the festive season underway in full swing, concerns have been raised regarding the condition of Ranganathan Street – the shopping hub at T Nagar.
According to sources, ”Various civic issues like damaged road, scattered garbage and ineffective stormwater drains pose inconvenience to users”.
Speaking on this, Narayanaswamy of Motilal Street, said, ”The road was re-laid a long time ago. Now, it is full of patches and potholes all through.”
It is alleged that the issues faced by Ranganathan Street, are related to the adjacent Rameswaram Road, which recently saw an ineffective concrete re-lay.
Rajaraman, another resident here, said, ”The street becomes slushy even for a small shower. There are several places where there is heavy water-logging.”
”Residents and other forums have been raising these issues quite often, but the solutions proposed are only temporary,” he added.
Few other issues like clearance of garbage, frequent drainage blocks and unauthorised parking of vehicles, need to be addressed here, it is learnt.
While the civic body organises clearance in the evenings, domestic waste that is scattered all over, results in a stench filling the stretch.
”The authorities should make arrangements for mobile garbage bins that are spread across the street, to help people dispose their garbage,” suggested Narayanaswamy.
”Also, the area should be covered under schemes like ‘Swachh Bharath’, so that each one here will realise the significance of keeping the space clean and tidy. Just like how the police department takes special measures for the safety of shoppers this season, the civic body too should swing into action and set right the said issues,” he noted.
