Chennai: The Supreme Court today declined a petition filed by MDMK chief and Rajya Sabha MP Vaiko insisting urgent hearing of a habeas corpus seeking to produce National Conference leader and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah.
In the petition, Vaiko asked the judge to take up the case tomorrow. However Justice N V Ramana declined it and said only the Chief Justice can decide if a case has to be taken up urgently.
In the habeas corpus filed yesterday, he stated that Abdullah, who was slated to attend a conference in Chennai 15 September on the occasion of birth anniversary of former Chief Minister C N Annadurai has been unreachable since 5 August after the Central Government detained political leaders of the State and imposed curfew measures there following the abrogation of special status of Jammu & Kashmir.
The petition sought a direction to the Union of India to produce Farooq Abdullah before the Supreme Court and to set him at liberty so as to enable him to attend the conference in Chennai 15 September.
