Canal in Anna Nagar ‘O’ block needs attention.

Chennai: Open canal filled garbage and waste near ‘O’ Block, Anna Nagar East is a cause of concern for residents in the locality.

“The canal which is miserably choked by wastes all along the stretch raises stink. This may led to outbreak of diseases,” says, Gayathiri, who lives in VOC Nagar. She adds, “I have been witnessing this problem from months now. The entire canal is blocked by garbage and is fast becoming a dumpyard.”

Subramanium, a senior citizen, says, “The condition of the drainage has gone from bad to worse. Wastes stagnate because the drain is completely blocked. It has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.”  He says, “The canal should be maintained properly and cleaned often to prevent outbreak of diseases.”

Another resident Arun, says, “It is never easy to walk on the road. Bad odour from the canal troubles commuters and pedestrians.” “The situation has become worse. Imagine the plight of students, who goes through this stretch to their schools.”

Selvan, a resident of Sathya Nagar, “Officials should act fast and clean the canal. We made several complaints to officials concerned but all have fallen on deaf ears’.”

A Corporation official said, “We kept bins at several place to avoid dumping into this open canal. But, residents are not following rules and many throw waste into the canal.”
