Chennai: With the highly controversial case of NEET impersonation getting murkier each passing day, sources say that the investigation could be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The case is currently being inquired by the CB-CID which booked several students, parents and brokers who were involved in employing imposters to write the medical entrance exams and getting seats.

Many suspect that the impersonation could have happened in other States as well.

In a latest development, CB-CID arrested a middle man Govindaraj, a native of Vaniyambadi. He is said to be one of the main accused in the case.

Meanwhile, the case has taken another turn when an accused student Irfan and his family denied the impersonation claims.

Irfan, a student of Dharmapuri Government Medical College, who allegedly used an impostor, is lodged in Salem jail till 9 October. He was also dismissed from his college.

Irfan’s father, Dr Mohammed Shafi who runs a private clinic in Vaniyambadi was arrested by CB-CID. But, in a media statement, the family has denied all such allegations.

Irfan’s lawyer Sreenivasan said that Irfan was not a student of Dharmapuri college and was studying in Mauritius since November.

The family claimed they did not know how Irfan’s documents were found in Dharmapuri medical college and the police must find it out.

Sreenivasan said that Shafi and his family were being tortured by the police.

Police sources however said that Shafi introduced broker Rasheed to the other parents.

The NEET impersonation scandal was brought to light with the arrest of MBBS student of Theni Government medical college, K V Udit Surya and his father Venkatesan, a doctor at Government Stanley hospital.

George Joseph, an agent from Thiruvananthapuram, is said to have helped Udit arrange a proxy candidate and has allegedly taken Rs 20 lakh from Dr Venkatesan. He is said to be in police custody.

CB-CID found other students including Praveen of SRM Medical college and his father Saravanan, an owner of a travel company, Rahul of Balaji Medical college and his father Davis, a sub-contractor for laying internet cables and Abirami of Sai Satya Medical College involved in the case.
