Chennai: There is a good news and a bad news for Velacheri Railway Station. The good: It is going to developed as a model railway station, with lot of improvement work in the pipeline. And, the bad: A survey has listed it as one of the ‘dirtiest railways stations in India’

According to a third-party audit and cleanliness ranking of major stations, Guindy Railway Station figured second in the list, while Velacheri was ranked fourth.

The survey, released by the Railway Ministry, took into account 720 railway stations from all over India.

The survey also found that Tamilnadu had six of the 10 dirtiest railway stations, but Railway officials in Velacheri are not ones to be bogged down by it. Instead, they looked at the brighter side of things.

Speaking to News Today
, an official said, “We actually don’t know how it has happened. The station is not that bad in terms of cleanliness. I would say, the ceiling is a problem. It is dirty and covered with cobwebs. It is a high ceiling and tough to clean. Other things are quiet fine, though there is scope for improvement, I accept. Compared to other stations, like Kasturibai Nagar, Light House and Triplicane, this station is far better. We do not know how they chose it and based on what parameters they did the survey. I saw that Palavanthangal Station too is on the list, it is far better than Velacheri.”

He added that Velacheri and Thirumayilai (Mylapore) stations will soon be given a facelift.

“Velacheri station is going to be developed as a model station. There are a lot of things in the pipeline. Work will begin soon at Velacheri.”
