Chennai: The City Crime Branch (CCB) is conducting an inquiry into the allegations of cheating made against V M Jothimani, who belongs to the family of former Chief Minister and DMK supremo M Karunanidhi.

Jothimani is married to Ezhil Arasi, who is the granddaughter of Karunanidhi through his daughter Selvi Selvam.

According to sources, a case of robbery and cheating was filed by the Neelankarai police against Jothimani and it was later was handed over to the CCB.

It is learnt that Jothimani runs a cosmetic business and cheated another businessman of Rs 80 lakh. Case was filed against him and four others who allegedly carried out the crime.

It is claimed that a few weeks ago, Jothimani’s friend Zakir Ahmed Daman contacted one Dinesh (33) of Sowcarpet, who also runs a cosmetic business.

Zakir told Dinesh that if he (Dinesh) could give Rs 80 lakh in the denominations of Rs 500 and Rs 2000, he would be given Rs 100 crore in return, in Rs 100 denomination.

Dinesh went to a house in ECR with the cash. At the house, he met Jothimani, Muniyandi, Vignesh and David.

They took the money from him and escaped through the back door after going to another room on the pretext of counting the notes, it is said. Following this, Dinesh lodged a police complaint.

Police have found that Jothimani has several other cheating cases against him.

Following the latest incident, Selvi Selvam has issued a notice in a vernacular daily newspaper that the they are not associated with Jothimani and would not take responsibility for his action.
