Tiruchi: More than 100 persons were being questioned by the Tiruchi police today, in connection with the Rs 1.43 crore burglary from BHEL Employees Cooperative bank Friday.

The police were also checking the CCTV visuals which recorded a burglar arriving and leaving with the cash on a two-wheeler.

This is the third major robbery in Tiruchi area, after the Punjab National Bank and Lalithaa Jewellery cases.

Police said that a windowpane in the bank building was removed to gain access. It is said that Rs 1.51 crore was brought to the bank in cash from a private bank on Thursday morning.

Out of the Rs 1.51 crore, Rs 8 lakh was kept in the cashier’s cupboard and the rest was left in a suitcase and kept in a room.

The CCTV showed a masked man carrying out the robbery in seven minutes. The bank had just five employees who told the police that they considered it safe to leave the cash in the bank over night. Further inquiries into the case are underway.

Recently, a gang had carried out a robbery of gold, silver and diamonds worth Rs 13 crore from Lalithaa Jewellery store.

The Tiruchi city police arrested some persons and recovered a portion of the valuables.

In January, masked men had entered the Punjab National Bank at Bikshandarkoil in Tiruchi and made away with Rs 19 lakh and 450 sovereigns of gold.
