Chennai: While Chennai received mild rains, overnight heavy showers lashed the suburbs and neighbouring districts, resulting in traffic snarls on roads leading to the city.

Met officials have predicted light to moderate spells for the next two days.

The Indian Metereological Department today stated that the light to moderate rains, which are likely to occur for two days in coastal areas of Tamilnadu and Puducherry, are due to the heat impact.

The department added that Kanchipuram, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur and Thiruvarur areas are likely to receive heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours.

For Chennai, an official communique said, ”The sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy. Light to moderate rain is expected to occur in some areas. Maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 31 and 25 deg Celsius, respectively.”

It may be noted that Tambaram recorded 15 cm which has been highest rainfall of the season. Tambaram (15 cm), IAF Tambaram (13 cm) and Jayamkondan (10 cm) topped the charts of chief amount of rainfall recorded today.

The government has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in Kanchipuram, Chengalpet, Vellore, Ranipet and Tirupattur districts. The exams for colleges affiliated with Madras University have been postponed.

As the rains lashed the city, GST Road along Vandalur and Tambaram-Velachery Main Road took a blow and the commuters were stranded in the bottleneck due to waterlogging. The bridge in Irumbuliyur, near Tambaram, was flooded.

Several residents took to Twitter to narrate their plights due to civic apathy. Many streets in and around Selaiyur, Madambakkam and Thiruvancheri flooded as Selaiyur lake was up to the brim and the outlet valves were let open, that disrupted the vehicular flow.
