Chennai: The Special Court constituted to hear complaints against MPs and MLAs has issued summons to DMK president and the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamilnadu Legislative Assembly, M K Stalin, Congress leader S Thirunavukkarasar, VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan, former Deputy Mayor Karate Thiyagarajan and three others in connection with staging a protest without permission and disrupting public life.
The summons have been issued for an agitation staged in April 2018 in the Cauvery issue. Judge Ramesh, who ordered the summons, have directed them to appear in person on 26 December.
Last year, the Madras high court had stayed all further proceedings in a defamation case against Stalin, pending before the special court for politicians cases (MP and MLA), Chennai, it may be recalled.
Justice N Anand Venkatesh granted the interim stay on a petition filed by Stalin, which sought to quash the defamation proceedings pending against him before the special court.
In october 2018, Stalin appeared before the special court in connection with defamation cases initiated against him by AIADMK government.
Following a report in a Tamil daily about certain remarks made by Stalin, the then City Public Prosecutor had filed a defamation case against the DMK leader and a few others.
