Even as Delhi, which is shivering under an intense spell of cold wave for two weeks, experienced its coldest recorded December day on Monday, with the maximum temperature being at just 9.4 degrees Celsius, the Jawaharlal Nehru University, one of the premier higher educational institutions in the capital, on Monday said it will implement the new hostel manual from Wednesday, with its Vice-Chancellor appealing to the students to call off their strike.

After a meeting of all the three Rectors, the university’s Registrar, the Deans of Schools and Chairpersons of the Special Centres, a circular was also issued urging the students, who have completed their ”academic requirements of Monsoon semester 2019”, to register for the new semester between Wednesday and 5 January.

For those who have not completed the ”academic requirement’s’ provisional registration will be allowed during the same period, the varsity said. It said the provisionally registered students are required to complete the ”academic requirement’s’ by January 20, 2020 to keep their registration valid. The Deans and Chairpersons will ensure that evaluations, examinations and grading of all the provisionally registered students are completed on or before 20 January, 2020, the varsity said. For all the students, winter semester will start as per the academic calendar, it said. According to a varsity official, the students who boycotted exams and did not take the tests even the question papers were sent to them through email and WhatsApp have been given another chance.

Meanwhile, as faras the capital’s weather condition is concerned, Kuldeep Srivastava, head of the regional weather forecasting centre, said the day temperature on Monday was almost half of what is considered normal for this day of the year. ”Today was the coldest day recorded for the month of December,” Srivastava said.

The IMD said the Aya Nagar weather station recorded the day temperature at 7.8 degrees Celsius, followed by Ridge (8.4), Palam (9), Lodi (9.2). The national capital has been witnessing its most unforgiving winter season in the past 22 years, as the minimum temperature has remained around 3 degrees Celsius for a few days. It has been experiencing ‘severe cold days’ since 14 December, according to IMD.

Though the temperature and JNU news have no connection with each other except from the fact that both are happening in New Delhi, while human beings are partially responsible for the climate conditions, they are the whole and only reason for the prevailing climate in places of importance like JNU. It is the responsibility of every stakeholder to ensure that ”weather conditions” are good here.
