Robbers held at Central Chennai, 25 sovereigns seized

Chennai: The Railway Police seized 25 sovereigns of gold after arresting a five-member gang who had been allegedly stealing from passengers at the Central Station premises.

According to police, the men posed as passengers and targeted unsuspecting travellers. They cut opened bags with a blade and stole gold, money and other valuables.

Recently, a passenger Vanitha had lodged a complaint that she lost gold ornaments kept in her handbag while travelling from Chennai to Puducherry. This was among the many complaints the police had received.

Following this, three separate teams were formed led by three Railway Deputy Superintendents of Police. This morning the gang was at Platform 15 at the station when the police quizzed them about their whereabouts. After they gave contradictory replies, the police took them to custody. They have been identified as Rajendran (46), Madanlal (38), Ram (40), Sunilkumar (34) and Sureshkumar (39). The men are from Delhi and Haryana. Police seized 25 sovereigns of gold from them.
