Special Sub Inspector Wilson

Chennai: Two men who are allegedly linked with the gang that gunned down a Special Sub Inspector at Kaliyakkavilai in Kanyakumari district two days ago have been reportedly held by the police at Palakkad in Kerala.

According to sources, identified as Syed Ibrahim and Abbas, the men are suspected to have links with the gang which shot and killed SSI Wilson (57), attached to Kaliyakkavilai police station, on 8 January.

According to sources, the duo are currently kept in custody at Town South Police Station in Palakkad and are being questioned by Tamilnadu ‘Q’ branch and Kerala police.

As per reports, both are natives of Tamilnadu and are living in Palakkad for a long time. It is suspected that the duo have involvement in certain terrorist-related and murder cases in Tamilnadu.

Police arrested them after they suspected that the two men could have provided shelter to the men who fled the spot in the car after the shooting incident.

On Thursday, the Tamilnadu police formed five special teams, led by Superintendent of police, Kanyakumari district, N Shreenath, to nab the gang members.

The police named Thoufique and Abdul Shamin as the primary accused in the case and an intense search is on for them. Thoufique and Abdul are suspected to be ISIS sympathisers with a plan to carry out attacks in Tamilnadu and Kerala.

Soon after the firing incident, a police team collected CCTV footage from the location and said that the assailants might have links with terrorists.

On 8 January at 10 pm, SSI Wilson and other policemen were on a routine vehicle check at the Padanthalumoodu check post. They had stopped an SUV coming from Thiruvananthapuram on suspicion. The vehicle stopped and one of the occupants got out and fired three rounds at the police officer and fled, reports said.

Wilson is survived by his wife, son and a daughter. He was five months away from retirement. Speaking in the Assembly Thursday, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami said strict action would be taken against the assailants.
