Chennai: The city police have registered cases on those protesting Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) at Washermenpet. Cases were filed against 300 protesters, including 100 women this morning.
According to sources, the protesters who entered into the 12th day of sit-in agitation at Kannan Road, were booked under 10 sections. Yesterday, the police booked five men for allegedly abusing three policemen at the protest site.
It is said that five persons arrived in car at the protest venue and began raising slogans against Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami. While this was happening, policemen from the Intelligence Wing including Sub-Inspector Rajavel, Special Sub-Inspector Senthil and Constable Manohar began taking a video of it. The protesters noticed this and allegedly abused the policemen and deleted the videos. Subsequently, they were booked under five sections.
It may be noted that members of Muslim groups have been protesting against CAA, National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the National Population Register (NPR) from 14 February. They began with a massive protest which resulted in a lathi charge by the police. Both police and protesters were injured in the incident.
