Chennai: Former Minister and AIADMK veteran C Ponnaiyan was today appointed as the Vice Chairman of the State Planning Commission.

According to an official order, the State Planning Commission functions under the Chairmanship of the Chief Minister. It said the government has decided to appoint Ponnaiyan as the Vice Chairman of the Commission.

Ponnaiyan was member of the Tamilnadu Assembly in 1977, 1980, 1984 and 2001. He started his career as a lawyer. He took to public life at an early age. He has served as Minister of Finance, Education, Industry, Agriculture, Cooperation, Highways, Transport, Law and IT.

He was a close confidant of former Chief Minister M G Ramachandran and served as Minister of Finance under former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.
