Over 1,000 shifted to shelter homes in Chennai


Chennai: Chaos prevailed at Puratchi Thalaivar Dr M G Ramachandran Central Railway Station Sunday when more than a thousand people, predominantly migrant daily wagers, gathered there to take trains to their native places.

Police said the workers were from north India and now that they were out of work due to the outbreak of coronavirus, they wanted to go back home. As soon as the large crowd gathered outside Central station. policemen arrived to clear them as part of Janta Curfew. However, as the people refused to leave, a minor altercation took place between the policemen and the crowd.

A senior official said, there were 1152 men, 75 women and 11 children. They were shifted to 12 Corporation shelter homes and schools. They were tested for fever and food is being arranged for them. ”They did not know the seriousness of the pandemic and did not leave earlier,” the official added.
