Chennai: The Chennai City Police have registered 1,400 cases for various offences, including for violating prohibitory orders imposed as part of nation-wide lockdown to tackle coronavirus.
Police sources said 283 cases were registered in the city Thursday alone for violating prohibitory orders, home quarantine rules and spreading rumours about COVID-19. A total of 199 two-wheelers and a LCV was also seized.
Of the 283 cases, 279 cases were registered for violating Sec 144 of CrPc, three cases for not following quarantine orders and one for spreading rumours. So far a total of 1,400 cases were registered, including four for drunken driving (though state-owned TASMAC shops remained closed–monopoly for selling liquor), 49 for not wearing helmets and 547 for traffic violations.
So far, the traffic police have seized 10 cars and LCVs,580 two-wheelers, 73 autos and seven others, taking the numbers to 670 seizures as on date.
