
Chennai: Four couples from Indonesia were arrested by Chengalpattu police for indulging in religious activities in the district while they are in India on tourist visas.
According to reports, all the eight had attended the Tablighi Jamaat conference in Delhi early March and had subsequently reached Maduranthakam in Chengalpattu district on 21 March by train.
It is said the eight people were preaching small gatherings despite the lockdown. Recently, cases were filed by Tamilnadu police on 66 Islamic religious preachers and 11 of them were arrested for breaching Section 144 imposed in the State.
Police said, they were found travelling across the State for preaching activities. They were from places such as Bangladesh, Indonesia and Thailand.
It may be noted that the police have laid stringent measures to ensure that no one steps out of their houses as the State is battling coronavirus pandemic and is under lockdown.
