Chennai: For the first time the number of positive cases crossed the 200-mark on a single day in Tamilnadu, with an all time high of 203 fresh cases reported on Friday, even as the Chennai tally crossed the 1,000 mark with a total of 176 cases, also the highest in a single day so far.
Talking to reporters, Health Minister Dr C Vijayabaskar said the toll rose to 28 with the death of a 98-year-old man, who tested positive,at 10.20 am at the Omandurar Multi Super Speciality Hospital here, even as the total number of positive cases in the State mounted to 2,526.
A total of 203 people tested positive today–the highest thus far ever since the first case was reported in early March.
Apart from Chennai, where the COVID graph reached unprecedented levels (a staggering 512 cases in the last four days), the tallycrossed the 1,000-mark at 1,082 cases, with 203 new cases today that included 117 men and 86 women.
In fact, the total cases doubled in the last four days from 570 on 27 April to 1,082 cases as on date.
Of the 203 cases, Chennai reported 176 followed by Chengalpattu (8), Tiruvallur (6), Madurai (3) Kanchipuram/Thanjavur (2 each), Cuddalore, Dindugul, Karur, Nagapattinam, Villuppuram and Ariyalur (one each).
Among those tested positive were eight children below 12 years of age,including a two-and-a-half-month-old baby boy.
Of the total 2,526 cases, 1,670 were men and 856 women. This included 150 in 0-12 age group (78 male/72 female), 2,110 in 13-60 age group (1410/700) and 266 above 60 years of age (182/84).
A total number of 54 people, who have tested positive, were today discharged, as the number of cured patients increased to 1,312.
