Covid-19: Many districts come into red zone through Koyambedu link

Chennai: For the second day, the number of corona cases in Tamilnadu went beyond 500 taking the tally past the 4,000 mark, including 2,000-plus in Chennai, even as the toll due to Covid-19 rose to 33 in Tamilnadu with the death of two people on Tuesday.

A bullet in issued by the Health and Family Welfare department said a 56-year-old Chennai man with comorbidities from Chennai admitted on 26 April at the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital died last evening at 6.20 pm, while a 60-year-old women admitted on May two in the same hospital died yesterday, reported positive Tuesday.

Of the total 33 deaths, 20 were reported in Chennai, two each in Chengalpattu, Madurai, Villuppuram and one each in Dindugul, Erode, Kanchipuram, Theni, Tuticorin, Vellore and Coimbatore.

On a single day count, the number of cases crossed the 500-mark for the second day in succession with 508 cases (353 men, 154 women and a transperson) as a total of 4,058 people have tested positive so far that included 2,745 men, 1,311 women and two Transgenders.

The release said a majority of the cases were linked to the single largest cluster — Koyambedu Wholesale vegetable market in the city, from where the number of those testing positive continued to be on the upswing for the last couple of days.

Of the 508 cases reported in 12 districts (signifcant increase in the number of cases in districts when compared to last few days) today, Chennai topped with 279 positive cases (again a single day high) and most of them were linked to Koyambedu market, taking the city’s corona tally past 2,000 at 2,008.

Apart from Chennai, a large number of cases linked to Koyambedu market were reported in districts of Cuddalore (68), Kallakurichi and Chengalpattu (38 each), Villuppuram (25), Tiruvallur (18), Namakkal (15), Dindugul (7), Theni (5), Nilgiris (4), Krishnagiri (2), Dharmapuri, Kanchipuram, Madurai, Perambalur, Salem, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Trichy and Virudhunagar (one each). As a result, many of these districts fell into red zone.

A total number of 76 people, who have tested positive, were today discharged, as the number of cured patients increased to 1,485.

Till date 1,74,828 samples, including 11,858 today, have been taken and sent for testing, of which 4,058 tested positive, 1,70,174 negative, while testing of 596 samples were under process and 9,637 samples were repeat samples of same persons.

The total number of persons tested till date was 1,65,191, which included 11,702 today of which 508 tested positive. A total of 3,198 suspected individuals were under treatment in isolation wards and 2,537 active cases were under treatment. The State has 52 testing facilities–36 government labs and 16 private labs.
