Chennai: A senior official of a Chennai-based herbal products firm died on Thursday minutes after consuming a drug he developed as a cure for Covid-19.

The 47-year-old general manager and pharmacist of Sujatha Bio-Tech which is well known for products like Nivaran 90, Velvette shampoo and Memory Plus, has been identified as Sivanesan.

According to sources, Sivanesan and the firm’s owner Dr Raj Kumar were keen on finding a cure for Covid-19 and began preparing a drug. After days of research, they finally developed one.

On Thursday, Sivanesan first gave the drug to Dr Raj Kumar to test. Soon after consuming it, he first fell unconscious. However, he became alright within 10 minutes, it is said.

Following this, Sivanesan too consumed the solution but collapsed. Colleagues took him to a hospital where he was declared dead. Teynampet police have registered a case and are conducting investigations.
